WILMINGTON, Del. - Junior forward
Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) made 9 of 16 shots from the floor and scored a career-high 23 points as Goldey-Beacom College (12-13, 9-9) secured a berth into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs by earning a 64-57 victory over Dominican College (11-14, 9-9) at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.
As a result of the victory, the Lightning earned the fourth and final postseason berth from the CACC South Division and will face Bloomfield College in the CACC quarterfinals on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 4:30 p.m. The Deacons, who beat the Lightning by a 65-53 margin on Feb. 8, wrapped up the North Division regular season title with a 68-63 victory over the University of the Sciences.
Grover scored 17 of her 23 points in the second half as the Lightning held off the Chargers to earn the win. She also added eight rebounds with a season-high five blocked shots.
The Lightning, who never trailed in the game, sprinted out to a 23-9 lead in the first 11 minutes of the opening stanza before the Chargers answered by scoring 12 consecutive points to trim the deficit to 23-21 with 5:23 remaining. Freshman guard
Shannon McGill (Curtis H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied five points during the run.
Led by eight points from senior forward
Briana Richmond-Peters (Brimm Medical Arts H.S./Camden, N.J.), Goldey-Beacom tallied 12 of the final 18 points to end the first half with a 35-27 advantage.
The Chargers opened the second half by scoring 12 of the first 16 points, including six points from junior guard
Lashonda Hathorne (St. John's Prep/Queens, N.Y.), to tie the game at 39-39 with 13:42 left in the period.
But, a 5-0 run by the Lightning over the next 59 seconds regained the Goldey-Beacom lead at 44-39 on a three-point field goal by junior guard
Taylor Leonard (John A. Coleman Catholic H.S./Lake Katrine, N.Y.) with 12:43 remaining.
The Chargers closed the gap to 48-47 with 9:37 remaining, but they were unable to get any closer.
While Grover led the Lightning to the victory, Richmond-Peters posted her fourth "double double" of the season by scoring 18 points with 15 rebounds. She tallied 17 of her 18 points in the first half by making 8 of 10 field goal attempts.
Senior forward
KC Jentzen (Nanuet H.S./Pearl River, N.Y.) led Dominican in the loss by recording her 10th "double double" of the season. The fifth-leading scorer in the CACC, Jentzen tallied 13 points with a game-high 15 rebounds. Meanwhile, Hathorne added 14 points after a 6-for-12 effort from the field.
The Lightning will play their regular season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when they host Philadelphia University at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Prior to the 6 p.m. tip-off, the Lightning will honor Richmond-Peters as part of their Senior Night festivities.
