Men’s Basketball Upends Lock Haven, 54-51

Chuck Hammond Gets 150th Victory as Head Coach



Kyle Steinbergin (Englewood, NJ) hit a critical 3-pointer and fellow senior Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill, NJ) made the decisive layup for Goldey-Beacom in a 54-51 victory over Lock Haven at the Joseph West Jones Center.
 
Goldey-Beacom opened a 45-38 lead with 8:08 remaining when senior Derrick Archie (Wilmington, DE) got the team going with an emphatic dunk.  But Lock Haven scored the next seven points, forging a 45-45 tie with 5:35 left when Theo West hit twice from the line.
 
The game went back-and-forth the rest of the way and the Bald Eagles took their last lead, 49-48, with 2:15 to go on West's layup.
 
But GBC (4-8) would not be upset for long.  Senior Joey Getz (Philadelphia, PA) had the ball and found a wide-open Steinbergin, who drilled a huge triple to give the Lightning a 51-49 lead with 1:57 left.
 
Lock Haven (3-7) got a pair of offensive rebounds on its next possession and West again came through at the line, this time with 1:32 to play for a 51-51 tie.
 
The Lightning then took the lead for good on their next trip.  Getz got the ball up top and looked in the paint for Gebhart, who canned a short jumper with 43 seconds left for a 53-51 margin.
 
Wali Hepburn missed a 3-pointer for the Bald Eagles and Getz hit once from the line with 29 seconds remaining for a 54-51 margin.  Hepburn then misfired on another 3-pointer, but temporarily redeemed himself by getting a steal with 5.9 seconds left.  However, GBC held on as Nate Walters missed a long 3-pointer in the closing seconds for the final.
 
Getz again played great, scoring 20 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and a season-best four 3-pointers.  This helped GBC shoot 39 percent (9-of-23) from the field in the second half to go with five 3-pointers overall.
 
Gebhart had 15 points and 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season and Archie contributed 10 and 10 for his second consecutive double-double.
 
West had 17 points and 14 rebounds, Hepburn scored 16 points and Walters had nine and 11 rebounds for the Bald Eagles, who shot 29 percent (20-of-68) from the floor and were 3-of-20 from 3-point range.
 
The victory also was the 150th for Goldey-Beacom coach Chuck Hammond.  In his 12th season, Hammond is the program's winningest coach and led the squad to an ECAC championship in 2007, consecutive CACC South Division titles from 2011-12 as well as three straight trips to the CACC final from 2010-12.
 
Goldey-Beacom returns to action Saturday at Nyack as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's contest starts at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm game.
