Women's Basketball Notches First Win of Season, 84-70 over Georgian Court

Bruno Leads Way with 21, Chukwueze a Close Second with 20

Wilmington, Del.-  The Lightning women's basketball team (1-6, 1-0 CACC) earned their first win of the season in convincing fashion as they defeated the Georgian Court Lions (0-6, 0-3), 84-70, at the Jones Center on Wednesday night.

Freshman guard Lexi Bruno (Millville Senior H.S./ Millville, N.J.) matched a career high, 21 points, in the win on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and knocking down 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Her 21 points tonight marks the third time this season Bruno has tallied at least 10 points.

Senior guard Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./ Cherry Hill, N.J.) recorded her first "double double" of the season, and third straight double digit effort, by scoring 20 points and pulling down a game high 12 rebounds. Chukwueze also added in a game high five assists while nabbing three steals.

The Lightning used a season high 42.9 percent shooting from the floor to take their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win.

With the scored all knotted up at the half, 34-34, the Lightning traded baskets with the Lions for the first three and a half minutes until a fire was lit. From the 16:29 mark until the 10:53 mark the Lightning went on an impressive 20-3, capped by a Reighly Melochick (Minersville Area H.S./ Pottsville, Pa.) layup, to take a commanding 58-44 lead. Melochick finished the evening with 11 points, nine of which came in the second half, on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor.

The Lightning never looked back following their big run as the Lions never were closer than nine points over the next ten and change.

The Lightning reached the foul line a season high 39 times as they hit 27 which was good enough for a .692 team percentage. They also shared the ball nicely as they tallied a season high 16 assists on 27 made baskets. In addition, they tallied a season high 14 steals, and forced 22 Lions turnovers.

The Lightning will look to continue on their success in the CACC as they travel to Bronxville, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon to take on the Clippers of Concordia University. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
