Men's Basketball Upends Georgian Court in Double Overtime

Albeit unconventional, the Lightning men's basketball team pulled out a double overtime Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Wednesday night in rousing fashion, 82-78, over the Georgian Court University Lions.

The Lightning improved to a 3-3, 1-0 record in the CACC as the Lions fell to a record of 2-6 and 0-3 in the conference.

Domineek Owens (Paul Robeson H.S./ Philadelphia, Pa.)  led the Lightning in the first half as he poured in 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. The Lightning also received a spark off the bench in the like of Kyle Steinbergin (Teaneck H.S./ Englewood, N.J.) who drained 3-of-6 from deep for a total of nine points in the first half. The Lightning took a 31-27 lead into the break which was capped by a controversial Curtis Hopkins "buzzer-beater" that fell as time expired.

Owens came out of the gate in the second half firing on all cylinders as he scored another 12 points, 10 of which came from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.  Senior center Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill West H.S./ Cherry Hill, N.J.) also had a strong second half as he shot 75 percent from the floor (3-of-4) and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. Gebhart's biggest basket of the evening came with less than a second on the clock. With the Lightning down two points, 60-58, and less than 4 seconds on the clock, point guard, Joey Getz (Archbishop Wood H.S./ Philadelphia, Pa.) drove the lane and found Gebhart wide open on the weak side, Gebhart calmly kissed the ball off the glass and into the rim. Gebhart was also fouled on the play but was unable to knock down the free throw to seal the game.

Gebhart redeemed his regulation free throw miss by knocking down four consecutive free throws to take a two point lead, 64-62, with 3:23 remaining in the first overtime period. With both teams easily in the double bonus, the cat and mouse free throw game began. The Lions, who shot 67.5% from the free throw line, were unable to take advantage of the multiple free throw opportunities they had as they only made nine out of 18 total attempts in the first extra period. Senior forward Derrick Archie (Christiana H.S./ Wilmington, Del.) stepped up his game in the second overtime and recorded the last four points of the stanza and tied the game at 68 apiece on a layup with five seconds remaining. The Lions were unable to beat the Lightning pressure and did not have a decent look as their "hailmary" attempt sailed wide left.

In the second overtime period the Lions took a 1-point lead on a Keith Hughes free throw with 3:53 left to play. On the next position, the Lightning had excellent ball movement and found Steinbergin wide open at the top of the arc, he nailed the three, as Owens set a pick for Steinbergin, he was fouled which sent him to the free throw line for two shots that both found nothing but net. The 5-point possession was all the Lightning needed to seal their fate. Getz pushed the run to 8-0 on a three pointer from deep with the shot clock running down. The Lions were as close as five points on a good three pointer by Jordan Wejnert with 18 seconds remaining but the comeback effort fell short.

Owens finished the game with a team high, 24 points. Gebhart netted 15 points in just 18 minutes due to foul trouble. Steinbergin finished 5-of-11 from three and hit one of two from the line for 16 points on the evening.  Getz finished with 14 points to go along with a game high seven assists and Archie finished with nine points and a game high three blocks.

The Lightning will continue their CACC slate on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Bronxville, N.Y. for a 4:00 PM start against Concordia University.
