Women's Tennis Advances to CACC Championship with 5-3 Win Over Chestnut Hill

Lightning Take Four of Five Single Matches

Philadelphia, PA.- Goldey-Beacom advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference final after posting a 5-3 triumph over the number two seed Chestnut Hill on Saturday afternoon.

The Griffins seemed poised for an upset after taking a 2-1 lead following doubles play. At number two doubles Iman Williams-Mulesa and Axe Owens posted a 8-2 win over the Lightning team of Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) and Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany).

The Lightning tied the contest, 1-1, at third doubles as Anastatia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) and Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) paired up for an 8-4 win over Hayley Craskey and Hannah Hills.

The Griffin team of Charlotte Dawson and Morgan Oechsle wrapped doubles play with a tightly contested 9-7 win at number one over the Lightning's Filipa Correia (Monte Estoril, Portugal) and Maria Victoria (Totana, Spain).

Trailing 2-1 in a race to five format, the Lightning had some work to do during singles play and they did just that by winning four out of five singles matches with one match unfinished.

Julia Gutierrez (Quart, Spain) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at number four singles over the Griffins Owens to square the contes, 2-2.

The Lightning took a 3-2 advantage as the number six singles played, Sengl, defeated Hills, 6-1, 6-0.  That lead grew to 4-2 when number Mrad defeated Craskey, 7-5, 6-1, at fifth singles.

The Griffins closed the gap to 4-3 when Dawson beat Laura Moreno (Murcia, Spain) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-1.  But the Lightning sealed their fate to the conference championship when Puentes Robinson defeated Oechsle at number three singles, 6-1, 6-3.

The Lightning will face the defending champion, Concordia College Clippers this afternoon starting at noon.
