Women's Tennis Blanks Molloy in Season Opener

Lightning Open Season With Victory for 6th Straight Season

Anastasia Melnikova and the Lightning won their season opener for the sixth straight year.

WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by a pair of victories from junior Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia), Goldey-Beacom College (1-0) opened its season by earning a 9-0 non-conference victory over Molloy College (0-1) at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The win allowed the Lightning to open the season with a victory for the sixth consecutive season.

After teaming up with senior Gabriela Chaves (Joao Pessoa – PB, Brazil) to earn an 8-0 victory at number two doubles, Puentes Robinson posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number one singles over freshman Stephanie Rances (Jamaica, N.Y.).

Meanwhile, Chaves posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at number four singles against senior Gabrielle DiCroce (East Meadow H.S./East Meadow, N.Y.).

Making her college debut, freshman Maria Angeles Victoria Martinez (Santiago, Spain) earned a pair of victories. After recording an 8-2 triumph with freshman Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) at number one doubles, Martinez defeated senior Nikki Gloria (Thomas Edison H.S./Queens Village, N.Y.) by a 6-0, 6-3 score.

Sengl, who was one of three Goldey-Beacom freshmen to make their college debut, earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number five singles over senior Megan Lawless (Baldwin, N.Y.).

Junior Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) also won a pair of matches in the season opener. She teamed up with freshman Raquel Santos (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) for an 8-0 triumph at number three doubles before earning a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 win at number three singles.

Junior Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number six singles over junior Ryan Quick (St. John the Baptist H.S./Long Beach, N.Y.).

The Lightning will open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Friday, Sept. 13 against Post University at 2 p.m.
