WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by a pair of victories from junior
Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia), Goldey-Beacom College (1-0) opened its season by earning a 9-0 non-conference victory over Molloy College (0-1) at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The win allowed the Lightning to open the season with a victory for the sixth consecutive season.
After teaming up with senior
Gabriela Chaves (Joao Pessoa – PB, Brazil) to earn an 8-0 victory at number two doubles, Puentes Robinson posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number one singles over freshman
Stephanie Rances (Jamaica, N.Y.).
Meanwhile, Chaves posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at number four singles against senior
Gabrielle DiCroce (East Meadow H.S./East Meadow, N.Y.).
Making her college debut, freshman
Maria Angeles Victoria Martinez (Santiago, Spain) earned a pair of victories. After recording an 8-2 triumph with freshman
Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) at number one doubles, Martinez defeated senior
Nikki Gloria (Thomas Edison H.S./Queens Village, N.Y.) by a 6-0, 6-3 score.
Sengl, who was one of three Goldey-Beacom freshmen to make their college debut, earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number five singles over senior
Megan Lawless (Baldwin, N.Y.).
Junior
Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) also won a pair of matches in the season opener. She teamed up with freshman
Raquel Santos (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) for an 8-0 triumph at number three doubles before earning a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 win at number three singles.
Junior
Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number six singles over junior
Ryan Quick (St. John the Baptist H.S./Long Beach, N.Y.).
The Lightning will open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Friday, Sept. 13 against Post University at 2 p.m.
