SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – After falling behind by a 1-0 margin in the fifth minute, Shippensburg University (1-0-0) used a pair of goals from freshman forward
Robert Furfaro (Chambersburg Area H.S./Chambersburg, Pa.) in the second half to earn a 2-1 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (0-1-0) in the season opener for both teams at the Robb Sports Complex on Friday evening.
Furfaro, who was making his college debut, netted both of his goals in a seven-minute span to give the Raiders their first win of the season.
The Lightning took a quick 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the match when senior midfielder
Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil) scored on a long shot from 25 yards away into the top right corner of the goal.
Goldey-Beacom held onto the one-goal advantage until the 68th minute when Furfaro converted a loose ball after a corner kick to tie the game on the first goal of his college career.
In the 75th minute, Furfaro gave Shippensburg a 2-1 advantage it did not relinquish when he took a pass from senior midfielder
Jonathan DeNicola (Mechanicsburg H.S./Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and scored his second goal of the match past senior goalkeeper
Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela).
Senior goalkeeper
Clay Sale (Rocky Mountain H.S./Fort Collins, Colo.) earned the win for the Raiders, but did not record a save.
Meinhard made seven saves in a losing effort for the Lightning, who were outshot by a 19-5 margin.
The Lightning, who open the season with a five-match road trip, will try to earn their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon when they visit the University of the District of Columbia at 1 p.m.
