Women's Tennis Returns to Winning Ways With 9-0 Win

Lightning Earn Fourth Shutout Win of the Season

Anastasia Melnikova earned her 30th career singles win on Monday.

WILMINGTON, Del. – Just two days after suffering its first loss of the season, the Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team returned to its winning ways with a 9-0 victory over Caldwell College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Monday afternoon.

The Lightning, who improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the CACC, earned their fourth shutout win of the season while the Cougars suffered their third straight setback to fall to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the CACC.

Freshman Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) extended her dual match singles win streak to six straight matches after posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number five singles. She also teamed up with senior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) for an 8-3 triumph at number one doubles.

Meanwhile, Cabanillas Moreno earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number two singles over freshman Koumudi Thirunagaru (Homestead H.S./San Ramon, Calif.).

Freshman Maria Angeles Victoria Martinez (Totana, Spain) also had a pair of victories against the Cougars. She posted a 6-1, 6-0 verdict over freshman Sara Riccardi (St. Dominic Academy/Jersey City, N.J.) at number three singles after teaming with senior Gabriela Chaves (Joao Pessoa – PB, Brazil) for an 8-0 win.

Junior Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) defeated freshman Nicole Caneo (Pompton Lakes H.S./Pompton Lakes, N.J.) by a 6-1, 6-0 score at number four singles while teaming with freshman Raquel Santos (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) for an 8-0 win at number three doubles.

Senior Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) and junior Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) also claimed singles victories. For Melnikova, it was the 30th singles win of her college career.

The Lightning will resume their CACC schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when they travel to Chestnut Hill for a 3 p.m. match against the Griffins.
