LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sophomore forward
Troy Amspacher (Conestoga Valley H.S./Lancaster, Pa.) scored two goals, including the eventual game-winning marker in the second half, to lead Lock Haven University (1-0-0) to a 4-2 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (0-3-0) in the Eagles' season opener at Hubert Jack Stadium.
Amspacher gave the Eagles a very quick 1-0 lead when he scored just 24 seconds into the match off an assist from junior forward
Trent Burris (East Juniata H.S./McAlisterville, Pa.).
In the 17th minute, the Eagles upped their advantage to 2-0 when sophomore midfielder
Jacob Oldaker (West Perry H.S./Elliottsburg, Pa.) converted a pass from sophomore midfielder
Jacob Klahold (Warwick H.S./Lititz, Pa.).
But, the Lightning cut the deficit to 2-1 with just 50 seconds remaining when sophomore defender
Daniel Bennett (Arthur P. Schalick H.S./Pittsgrove, N.J.) tallied the first goal of his college career when he headed in a corner kick from graduate student
Kyle Lawrence (Smyrna H.S./Smyrna, Del.).
After Amspacher regained the Eagles' two-goal advantage with his second goal of the match in the 61st minute, the Lightning received an own goal to narrow the margin to 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining.
However, the Eagles secured the victory with 11:07 left when Klahold scored an unassisted goal past senior goalkeeper
Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela).
While Amspacher led the Eagles with his two-goal effort, Klahold added a goal and an assist as the Eagles outshot Goldey-Beacom by a 17-7 margin.
Meinhard made seven saves in a losing effort for the Lightning, who dropped their third straight match to open the season.
The Lightning will continue their season-opening five-match road trip on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Caldwell College for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener against the Cougars at 2 p.m.
