Bonomo Sets Career Singles Wins Record in Women's Tennis Victory

Lightning Improve to 12-4 With 7-2 Win Over Kutztown

Melanie Bonomo now holds the GBC record with 43 career singles victories.

WILMINGTON, Del. – Senior Melanie Bonomo (Maracay, Venezuela) set the Goldey-Beacom College record by earning the 43rd singles victory of her career as the Lightning (12-4) claimed five of six singles matches en route to a 7-2 non-conference victory over Kutztown University (1-1) at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
 
Bonomo, who posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number five singles, passed Luciana Pereira on the Lightning's all-time list with the win. Pereira had a 42-8 singles record from 2008-11.
 
Sophomore Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) recorded a pair of victories against Kutztown. After teaming with junior Gabriela Chaves (Joao Pessoa – PB, Brazil) to earn an 8-3 win at number two doubles, she claimed a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) decision over Hannah Pipkin at number one singles.
 
In addition, senior Vanessa Leon (Caracas, Venezuela) also had two wins over the Bears, including a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number four singles over junior Tori Zander (Pennsburg, Pa.). Leon also paired with senior Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) to earn an 8-0 victory at number three doubles.
 
Sophomore Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at number three singles over senior Rachel Grula (Drums, Pa.) while sophomore Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) had a 6-2, 6-1 decision at number six singles.
 
Pipkin and senior Ridhima Borooah Guwahati-Assam, India) defeated Correia and Melnikova in number one singles with a 9-8 triumph.
 
The Lightning will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 12 when they travel to West Chester University for a 3:30 p.m. match against the Golden Rams. It will be the start of three straight road matches for the Lightning.
