WILMINGTON, Del. – Sophomore middle hitter
Chelsea Hughes (Shoreham-Wading River H.S./Wading River, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 14 kills and added nine blocks as Philadelphia University (17-8, 16-2) held off Goldey-Beacom College (6-22, 0-18) to earn its seventh win in a row with a five-set Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Wednesday evening.
The Rams, who also extended their CACC win streak to 12 matches in a row, earned a 25-17 victory in the first set before the Lightning rallied for a 25-22 win in the second set. After the Rams took the third set by a 25-8 margin, the Lightning forced a fifth set with a 25-22 triumph. However, the Rams overcame a 10-7 deficit in the fifth set to take the match with a 15-11 decision.
The win allowed the Rams to move into a tie for first place in the CACC South Division standings with Wilmington University. The Wildcats were idle on Wednesday night.
Hughes, who also hit .565 with one attack error in the match, was one of two Philadelphia University players to record at least 10 kills as senior outside hitter
Brittany Olson (Sycamore H.S./Sycamore, Ill.) posted 10 kills with six digs.
Meanwhile, sophomore setter
Allyson Schillinger (Springstead H.S./Spring Hill, Fla.) added a "double double" for the Rams by contributing 14 assists with 13 digs. Senior libero
Morgan McCarthy (South Side H.S./Beaver, Pa.) tallied a match-high 22 digs while senior setter
Heather Martin (Conestoga Valley H.S./Leola, Pa.) had 17 assists with seven service aces.
Junior outside hitter
Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.) matched her season high with a match-high 21 kills along with nine digs. Junior outside hitter
Taylor Moyer (Blue Mountain H.S./Schuylkill Haven, Pa.) contributed 11 kills with six digs and four blocks while freshman setter
Kim Matlock (Jackson Memorial H.S./Jackson, N.J.) had 14 assists with nine digs and a season-high five kills.
The Lightning, who suffered their fifth loss in the last six matches, will finish their season on Saturday, Nov. 9 by hosting Felician College in a CACC match at 12 p.m. Prior to the opening serve, the Lightning will honor their senior class. Meanwhile, Philadelphia University ends the regular season on Saturday at Bloomfield.
