Chukwueze's 28 Points Lift Women's Basketball Past Georgian Court

Junior Guard Scores 19 Points in Second Half as Lightning Win Third Straight Game

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Junior guard Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) made 10 of 20 shots from the floor en route to a season-high 28 points as Goldey-Beacom College (4-2, 1-1) won its third game in a row, a 63-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Georgian Court University (1-5, 0-2) at the GCU Wellness Center on Tuesday evening.

The Lightning took an early 5-4 lead in the opening three minutes of the game before the Lions answered by scoring 10 of the next 12 points to claim a 14-7 advantage on a lay-up by junior forward Ashiri Broadwater (Proviso East H.S./Chicago, Ill.) with 12:22 remaining.

After the Lions extended their margin to 20-13 with 6:51 left in the opening stanza, the Lightning answered with 11 consecutive points, including seven points from Chukwueze, to regain the advantage at 24-20 with 3:34 left.

Georgian Court trimmed the deficit to 24-22 before the Lightning scored three of the final five points in the half to take a 27-24 lead into the intermission.

Led by five points from Chukwueze, the Lightning increased their lead to 38-28 in the first four minutes of the second half. The Lions countered by scoring 10 of the next 13 points to narrow the gap to 41-38 on a jumper by sophomore guard Jade Williams (Rhodes H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.).

The Lightning scored 8 of the next 13 points to increase their cushion to 49-43 on a jumper by senior forward Briana Richmond-Peters (Brimm Medical Arts H.S./Camden, N.J.) with 6:40 remaining in the second half before Georgian Court answered by tallying 9 of the next 14 points.

However, Chukwueze scored six of the game's next eight points as the Lightning built a 60-54 advantage they did not relinquish.

In leading the Lightning to the victory, Chukwueze scored 19 of her game-high 28 points in the second half. She also added eight rebounds and three steals while playing 36 minutes. Meanwhile, junior forward Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) added 11 points with six rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots.

Richmond-Peters tallied a game-high 12 rebounds for the Lightning, who outrebounded the Lions by a 48-41 margin.

Broadwater came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points for the Lions in a losing effort after making 6 of 14 shots from the floor and four of five free throw attempts. She also contributed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lightning will finish their season-opening seven-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they visit Bloomsburg University for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.

• Chukwueze's 28 points are the most by a Goldey-Beacom player since Irene Hudson tallied 28 points at Philadelphia University on Jan. 26, 2012.
• The Lightning had a season-high 48 rebounds in the win over Georgian Court on Tuesday night.
• The Lightning also set a season high with five blocked shots in the victory.
• The Lightning have now beaten Georgian Court 16 consecutive times and are now 20-5 all-time against the Lions.
