WILMINGTON, Del. – Freshman forward
Charles O'Connell (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) recorded the first "hat trick" of his college career by scoring three goals as Chestnut Hill College (6-8-2, 5-4-1) overcame an early deficit to end a five-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College (2-13-1, 1-8-1) in a key Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Griffins, who earned their first victory since a 2-0 win over Caldwell on Oct. 5, moved into fifth place in the CACC standings with two matches remaining in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Lightning were eliminated from CACC Tournament consideration after dropping their sixth consecutive loss.
The Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when sophomore forward
Ernest Ackah (Smyrna H.S./Smyrna, Del.) tallied his second goal of the season after taking a pass from senior midfielder
Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil) and scoring on a shot from a sharp angle.
But, O'Connell scored three consecutive goals to give Chestnut Hill a 3-1 advantage it did not relinquish. After tying the game with 2:50 left in the first half off an assist from freshman midfielder
Matthew McLeod (Washington Township H.S./Sewell, N.J.), he gave the Griffins a 2-1 edge in the 57th minute with an unassisted marker after collecting a loose ball in the middle of the field and scoring on a long shot over the reach of senior goalkeeper
Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela).
With 29:14 remaining, he added an insurance goal when he took a through pass from senior midfielder
Mushe Wamulume (Penncrest H.S./Media, Pa.) and converted on a shot from 25 yards.
While O'Connell led the Griffins with his three-goal performance, freshman goalkeeper
James Jackson (Washington Township H.S./Sewell, N.J.) made four saves.
Meinhard, who leads the CACC with 97 saves in 16 matches, recorded seven saves for the Lightning, who were playing their penultimate home game of the season.
The Lightning will play their final road game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they travel to Concordia for a 2 p.m. match against the Clippers.
