WILMINGTON, Del. – Playing for the third time in two days, Concordia College (7-0, 7-0) showed no signs of fatigue as the Clippers secured the top seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Tennis Championship with an 8-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College (8-2, 6-1) at the DelCastle Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Clippers, who defeated University of the Sciences and Philadelphia University on Saturday, will be the number one seed for the four-team tournament, which will be held on Oct. 20-21 at Chestnut Hill College. Meanwhile, the Lightning clinched the number two seed for the tournament.
Freshman
Luisa Candido (Olympic Heights Community H.S./Boca Raton, Fla.) led the Clippers to the victory by earning a pair of wins. After teaming up with senior
Yuliya Plevako (Astana, Kazakhstan) to post an 8-2 victory at number one doubles, Candido defeated junior
Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) in straight sets at number two singles.
Meanwhile, Plevako earned a 6-1, 6-1 decision over senior
Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) at number three singles.
Seniors
Ana Mendes (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) and
Clara Catanzano (Sete, France) also collected two wins against the Lightning. The duo earned an 8-5 victory at number two doubles before each posted a win at number four and number five singles, respectively.
Freshman
Estelle Fougeray (Argences, France) defeated sophomore
Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) at number six singles in a three-set match by scores of 4-6, 6-2 and 10-6.
Sophomore
Alla Kravchuk (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and senior
Camilla Xavier (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also gave the Clippers a victory at number three doubles with an 8-2 verdict over Sancho and senior
Vanessa Leon (Caracas, Venezuela).
Sophomore
Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) gave the Lightning their lone point in the match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Kravchuk at number one singles.
The Lightning will travel to Millersville University on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m.
