Women's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight With 8-1 VIctory

Lightning Remain Unbeaten in CACC With 6-0 Record

WILMINGTON, Del. – After playing away from the DelCastle Tennis Center for the past six days, the Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team found comfort in returning home as the Lightning (8-1, 6-0) increased their win streak to five straight matches with an 8-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Chestnut Hill College (6-2, 4-2) on Friday afternoon.

After claiming all three doubles matches, the Lightning won five of six singles matches en route to the victory.

Sophomore Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) earned a pair of victories against the Griffins. After posting an 8-5 victory with sophomore Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) at number one doubles, Puentes Robinson overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first set to earn a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory over senior Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus).

Meanwhile, Melnikova helped the Lightning by claiming a 6-1, 6-0 win at number six singles over freshman Axe Owens (Pennington School/Trenton, N.J.).

Junior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) also had two wins, earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory at number two singles after pairing with sophomore Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) for an 8-5 triumph at number two doubles. Correia also contributed a singles win at the number four position, defeating sophomore Morgan Oechsle (Southern Lehigh H.S./Coopersburg, Pa.) by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

Seniors Vanessa Leon (Caracas, Venezuela) and Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) also earned an 8-5 decision at number three doubles. Leon also contributed a 6-4, 6-1 victory at number five singles over freshman Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario, Canada).

The Lightning will continue their homestand on Sunday afternoon when they host Concordia College in a match-up of the lone unbeaten teams in CACC play. The match will begin at 12 p.m. at the DelCastle Tennis Center.
