Women's Tennis Edges Southern New Hampshire, 6-3

Lightning Improve to 5-1 With Victory

Filipa Correia improved to 4-1 this season in singles action with a victory on Friday.

WILMINGTON, Del.
– Led by sophomore Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal), Goldey-Beacom College (5-1) won four of six singles matches en route to its fifth win of the season, a 6-3 non-conference victory over Southern New Hampshire (2-1) at the DelCastle Tennis Center on Friday morning.

After teaming with junior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) to earn an 8-1 victory at number two doubles, Correia earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over junior Kirsten Jean (Bedford H.S./Bedford, N.H.) at number four singles. Meanwhile, Cabanillas Moreno earned a three-set victory over sophomore Diana Vamvakitis (Westhampton Beach H.S./Wading River, N.Y.) at number two singles by scores of 4-6, 6-3 and 6-1.

Sophomore Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Columbia) posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number one singles while senior Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) had a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over senior Amanda Albuquerque (Weymouth H.S./Weymouth, Mass.) at number three singles.

Senior Vanessa Leon (Caracas, Venezuela) and junior Gabriela Chaves (Joao Pessoa-PB, Brazil) won at number three doubles for the Lightning in a 9-8 thriller that featured an 8-6 tiebreaker.

Sophomore Jamie Hann (Westhampton Beach H.S./Westhampton, N.Y.) defeated Leon at number five singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory while freshman Yolanda Green (Longmeadow H.S./Springfield, Mass.) claimed a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 verdict over senior Melanie Bonomo (Maracay, Venezuela).

The Lightning will compete at the ITA Regionals this weekend in Philadelphia before returning to their dual match schedule against Holy Family on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m.
