DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior setter/opposite
Monica Dempsey (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) became the fifth player in Goldey-Beacom College volleyball history to record 1,000 career digs, but the Lightning volleyball team (4-5) dropped a pair of non-conference matches against Mercy College and Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon at the Mercy Gymnasium.
After dropping a three-set decision against the host Mavericks by scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-21, the Lightning suffered a 25-13, 25-18, 25-16 decision against the Penmen in their second match.
Dempsey, who had moved into fifth place on the school's career digs list against Bowie State on Thursday night, recorded the milestone dig in the match against the Mavericks. She added 16 digs against Southern New Hampshire to increase her total to 1,016 digs, which moved her into fourth place on the school's all-time list.
Senior outside hitter
Brenna White (Douglas H.S./Gardnerville, Nev.) led the Mavericks to the three-set victory over the Lightning by tallying a match-high 20 kills while hitting .308. Meanwhile, junior outside hitter
Nicolette Gebhardt (Pine Bush H.S./Pine Bush, N.Y.) added 10 kills with a .692 hitting percentage.
Sophomore outside hitter
Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.) recorded a team-high 13 kills for the Lightning while adding six digs and two blocks.
In the loss against the Penmen, Dempsey recorded her fourth “double double” of the season with 11 assists and a match-high 16 digs while McCoy contributed 12 kills with eight digs. Freshman setter
Jamika Townsend (King's Fork H.S./Suffolk, Va.) posted a season-high 19 assists with eight digs as the Lightning earned their third loss in the last four matches.
Senior outside hitter
Erica Solomon (East Islip H.S./Islip Terrace, N.Y.) recorded her fifth “double double” of the season with a team-high 11 kills and 12 digs as the Penmen hit .317 as a team, including a .400 mark in the second set.
The Lightning will return home on Monday evening when they host the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at the Joseph West Jones College Center at 7 p.m.
