WASHINGTON, D.C. – Led by sophomore outside hitter
Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.), the Lightning volleyball team posted a pair of victories during the second day of the “Battle in the Nation's Capital” Tournament at the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon.
The Lightning, who dropped their season opener against Elizabeth City State on Friday, rallied from a one-set deficit to earn a four-set victory over Bowie State by scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-19.
In their second match, the Lightning overcame a two-set deficit against Virginia State to defeat the Lady Trojans in a five-set match by scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23 and 15-13.
Sophomore outside hitter
Taylor Moyer (Blue Mountain H.S./Schulykill Haven, Pa.) led the Lightning to the victory over Bowie State by recording a team-high 12 kills with a .257 hitting percentage while McCoy contributed eight kills with 12 digs.
Senior setter
Monica Dempsey (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) added a “double double” with 15 assists and a team-high 13 digs for the Lightning, who hit .417 as a team during the third set.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman outside hitter
Yaje Ngundam (Bowie H.S./Bowie, Md.), who had 12 kills and 15 digs. Meanwhile, freshman libero
Marissa Martinez (Valley H.S./Albuquerque, N.M.) added a match-high 23 digs with a service ace.
In the nightcap, McCoy tallied a season-high 21 kills and contributed nine digs for the Lightning while Moyer added 16 kills. Dempsey also added her second “double double” of the season with a match-high 39 assists and 14 digs. Freshman
Jamika Townsend (King's Fork H.S./Suffolk, Va.) nearly recorded a “double double” with 13 digs and nine assists.
The Lady Trojans were led by sophomore
Whitley Bradley (Steele H.S./Cibolo, Texas), who had 18 kills and a .262 hitting percentage while senior outside hitter
Nikkisha Walker (Battlefield H.S./St. Louis, Mo.) contributed a match-high 25 digs and nine kills.
The Lightning will open their home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 8 when they host UMass-Lowell and Bowie State in a pair of non-conference matches at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
