Volleyball Drops Season Opener at UDC Tournament

Lightning Fall in Four Sets to Elizabeth City State

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hoping to begin the 2012 season on a positive note, the Lightning volleyball team split the first two sets against Elizabeth City State in the opening match of the "Battle in the Nation's Capital" tournament on Friday morning. However, the Vikings battled back to take the next two sets and earn the victory in the season opener for both teams.

The Vikings won the match by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-22.

Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Moyer led the Lightning with 10 kills and also contributed three digs while senior setter Monica Dempsey added a "double double" with 13 assists and 11 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Mackenzie Wilson posted a match-high 20 digs in her college debut.

Junior outside hitter Whitney Green, who earned first team All-CIAA notice last year, led the Vikings with a match-high 13 kills while senior outside hitter Morghan Stallings contributed 12 kills and a team-high 15 digs.

The Vikings held Goldey-Beacom to a .000 hitting percentage and tallied 13 service aces.

The Lightning return to action on Saturday morning with a pair of matches at the "Battle in the Nation's Capital." After playing against Bowie State at 10 a.m., Goldey-Beacom will face Virginia State at 2 p.m.
