MEDIA, Pa. - Hoping to earn an upset over the top-ranked team in the NCAA East Region, the Goldey-Beacom women's tennis team earned a win at number one and number two singles against Queens College on Saturday evening.
However, the Knights (13-0) held off the Lightning's upset bid to remain unbeaten with a 6-3 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom (8-6) in a lengthy six-hour match played at the Granite Run Tennis Club.
The match was moved from Archmere Academy because of inclement weather, forcing the teams to play on just three courts.
The Knights won two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead. Junior Erika Goldsmith (Edison H.S./Edison, N.J.) and freshman Francesca Fanchin (LaGuardia H.S./New York, N.Y.) earned an 8-3 verdict at number one doubles over freshman Stephanie Puentes (Bogota, Columbia) and freshman Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) while senior Taylor Barber (Bountiful H.S./Salt Lake City, Utah) and junior Daniela Celi (Lake Howell H.S./Casselberry, Fla.) rallied to earn a 9-8 decision in number three doubles, which included a 9-7 tie-breaker.
Senior Marina Sales (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and freshman Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) posted the Lightning's lone doubles win with an 8-4 verdict at the number two position.
After the Knights upped their lead to 3-1 when Phoebe Chiem defeated Correia by a 6-4, 6-4 score at number three singles, the Lightning won the number one and number two singles matches to even the score at 3-3. Puentes defeated Goldsmith by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 score at number one singles while junior Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) defeated Fanchin in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-3).
But, sophomore Anna Rodionova (Orenburg, Russia) regained a one-point lead for the Knights with a straight set victory over Sales at number four singles.
Queens College, which was playing its first match of the Spring schedule, clinched the match when Celi posted her second win of the match, a 6-4, 6-3 victory over junior Melanie Bonomo (Maracay, Venezuela) at number five singles.
Barber held off Melnikova at number six singles with a three-set decision by scores of 6-4, 4-6 and 7-5.
The Lightning will return to action on Friday afternoon against New York Institute of Technology at 2 p.m. The match will be played at Archmere Academy.
