SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Led by freshman Stephanie Puentes, the Goldey-Beacom women's tennis team (8-4) earned its first win of the spring season with a 9-0 victory over Shippensburg University (0-8) at the Robb Sports Complex tennis courts.
Puentes earned an 8-0 victory at number one doubles with freshman Anastasia Melnikova before earning a straight set victory at number one singles against Kat Werner. Meanwhile, Melnikova posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at number five singles over Laura Babetski.
Freshman Filipa Correia also earned a pair of victories in the Lightning's win. After teaming up with senior Marina Sales to earn an 8-0 win at number two doubles, Correia posted a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Cassie Sidone at number three singles.
In addition, junior Vanessa Leon earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at number four singles after teaming up with sophomore Gabriela Chaves for an 8-2 verdict at number three singles. Chaves also earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kaitlyn Erickson in an exhibition match.
Junior Melanie Bonomo posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number six singles over Hannah Wolfe and also earned a win in exhibition doubles with junior Blanca Sancho, defeating Babetski and Erickson by an 8-0 count.
The Lightning will return to action on Saturday afternoon against Millersville University at 1 p.m.
