Lightning Fall to Dominican College in First Round of Playoffs

Melanie Johnson Had 11 Points in the loss
Boxscore

PIKE CREEK, DE - Sisters Marley and Stephanie Klunk each posted 11points, and a late comeback fell short as Dominican College nipped Goldey-Beacom College, 48-46, in the first round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs Satirday night at the Joseph West Jones Center. Hampered by 24% shooting in the second half and an 8-for-16
performance at the foul line, the Lightning saw its modest, 27-25 halftime lead quickly dissolve, allowing the first eight points of the final period to fall behind 33-27. Over the next 10-and-a-half minutes, both teams really struggled from the floor, but Goldey outscored the Chargers, 9-2, drawing within 36-35 on a lay-up by junior forward Akilah Sewell (three points, game-high 12 rebounds, four assists) with six-and-a-half minutes to play. That's as close as the hosts would get down the stretch, though, as Shannon Lavelle drilled a huge 3-pointer to spark a 12-4 run and widen Dominican's advantage to 47-40 with 1:41
remaining. The Lightning - whose starters shot just 8-for-40 (20%) - didn't give up, scoring six of the next seven points to pull within a deuce as backup sophomore guard Melanie Johnson connected on a three with 44 seconds left to make it 48-46. That would turn out to be the final scoring play of the contest, however, and Goldey-Beacom would see its fine season come to an end with a 19-8 overall record. Johnson was high scorer for the Lightning with 11 points, while junior guard Ashley
Rosario and freshman forward Chelsea Grover each finished with nine. Both teams struggled from the field (DC 33%, GBC 29%), but the 14-13 Chargers - who advance to the conference semifinals at Caldwell College on Friday - were better in the paint (20-6) and on the glass (43-36), enough to help tilt the balance in their favor.
