Millersville Rallies to Earn 60-48 Victory Over Men's Basketball

Lightning Drop 2nd Straight Game Despite 14 Points from Porter

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Junior center Elijah Obade (Charleroi H.S./Charleroi, Pa.) scored a career-high 28 points and added a game-high 18 rebounds as Millersville University (6-2) extended its win streak to six consecutive games with a 60-48 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (3-6) at the Marauders' Pucillo Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

With the victory, the Marauders earned their first win over Goldey-Beacom while handing the Lightning their second consecutive loss.

Led by eight points from Obade, the Marauders sprinted out to a 15-6 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the first half. But, the Lightning answered by scoring 17 of the next 23 points to take a 23-21 advantage on a jumper by sophomore guard Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) with 3:24 left before the intermission.

After five straight points by sophomore guard Brandon Brown (Cardinal Dougherty H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) regained a three-point edge for the Marauders, the Lightning scored the final nine points of the first half to take a 32-26 lead into the intermission.

Senior forward Lawrence Livingston (Caesar Rodney H.S./Dover, Del.) upped the Lightning advantage to 34-26 just 54 seconds into the second half before the Marauders used a 12-4 spurt to even the score at 38-38 on a lay-up by Obade with 12:14 remaining.

After the teams traded a pair of field goals, Millersville scored seven of the next nine points to take a 49-44 advantage on a Obade lay-up with 5:27 left.

The Lightning closed the gap to 51-48 by scoring four of the following six points, but the Marauders closed the game by scoring nine straight points, including five points from Obade.

Obade, who posted his sixth "double double" of the season, made 13 of 18 shots from the floor and also converted two of six free throws. In addition to his 18 rebounds, Obade tallied a career-high six blocked shots. Meanwhile, Brown contributed 12 points with five assists and two rebounds.

Porter scored 14 points with three rebounds and two assists to lead the Lightning in a losing effort while junior forward Jordan Thorpe (Mount Zion Christian Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.) added seven points with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lightning, who were playing their fifth straight road game, will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon when they host Caldwell College in the first game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at 12 p.m. Meanwhile, the Marauders will host Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon.

Game Notes: Millersville has defeated three teams from the CACC during its current six-game win streak … The Marauders defeated Wilmington by a 55-52 margin on Nov. 17 before a 72-34 victory over the University of the Sciences on Nov. 18 … The Marauders have held their opponents to fewer than 50 points three times during the current win streak … Goldey-Beacom and Millersville met for the third time in a series which the Lightning lead by a 2-1 margin … Obade has tallied three of his "double double" efforts in the last four games … Led by a career-high 13 rebounds from sophomore forward Xavier Mumford (Reading H.S./Reading, Pa.), the Marauders out-rebounded Goldey-Beacom by a 43-28 margin … Junior guard Larry Grant (Woodlands H.S./Greenburgh, N.Y.) set a season high by recording seven assists … With nine points against the Marauders on Wednesday night, junior guard A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) moved into 13th place on the Lightning's all-time scoring list and now has 602 points in his career … Over the last three games, Thorpe is averaging 13.3 rebounds per game … The Lightning were held to their lowest scoring output since a 66-43 loss against Bentley on Nov. 17.
