Opening Tip-Off
Looking to begin the regular season on a positive note, the Lightning will open a five-game road trip this weekend by competing at the St. Thomas Aquinas Classic. After opening the season against the host Spartans on Friday evening, the Lightning will face the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

A Look Back at Last Year
The Lightning set a school record by posting 19 wins last season, but lost in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament against Dominican College. Led by senior forward Irene Hudson, the Lightning also set a school record by winning 14 home games while matching a program record with 14 conference victories. Hudson, who earned second team all-CACC notice, was the Lightning's leading scorer with a 15.0 average.

Updating the Lightning
The Lightning dropped an 84-46 verdict in their lone exhibition game of the season at the University of Maryland on Monday night. After battling to a 38-27 score in the first half, the Lightning were limited to just 19 points after the intermission by the Terrapins. Senior guard Jacinda Jones led the Lightning with 15 points, including 12 in the first half.

Scouting St. Thomas Aquinas
Coming off an 18-11 season last year, the Spartans will also open their season schedule by facing the Lightning on Friday evening. The Spartans, who posted a 10-3 record at Aquinas Hall last year, return eight letter winners, including seniors Bianca Kowgios and Shpresa Liharevic. Liharevic was the Spartan's second-leading scorer last year with a 9.2 average while Kowgios led the team with 124 assists while contributing 8.6 points per contest. Coach Kim Lusk is starting her fifth season as the Spartans' leader. She has led St. Thomas Aquinas to a 64-53 record, including three consecutive winning seasons.

Scouting University of the District of Columbia
Picked to finish third in the 2012-13 East Coast Conference preseason women's basketball poll, the Firebirds are coming off a 21-7 season last year, including a 12-4 ECC record.  The Firebirds, who will open the season against Caldwell on Friday night, return 12 letter winners from last year's squad that reached the NCAA East Regional Tournament. Senior guard Janelle Junior is the top returning scorer from last year; she averaged 9.3 points per game while starting 25 of 28 contests. She scored 30 points against the Lightning in last year's 86-74 win at the American International Tip-Off Classic.

Senior Class to Serve as Captains
Seniors Irene Hudson, Jacinda Jones, Devonne Richardson, Ashley Rosario and Akilah Sewell have been selected by Coach Jen Carleton to serve as the captains for the 2012-13 Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team. For Jones, it will mark the fifth consecutive season she has served as a captain while Richardson, Sewell and Rosario also served as team captains last year.

What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will have a quick turnaround by traveling to Kutztown University on Monday evening for a non-conference game against the Bears. Opening tip-off at Keystone Arena is set for 6 p.m. Monday's game will be the season opener for the Bears, who are coming off an 8-20 season last year.
