PURCHASE, N.Y. – One of two seniors playing in the final match of their careers, senior middle hitter
Catherine Howard (William Penn H.S./New Castle, Del.) tallied a career-high nine blocks and added 10 kills as Goldey-Beacom College (5-22, 1-18) snapped a 19-match losing streak by earning a five-set Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Concordia College (6-18, 6-12) in a match played at Purchase College on Saturday morning.
The Lightning, who earned their first win since Sept. 13 at Bowie State, earned the victory by set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25 and 15-13. It was their second five-set match in less than 24 hours after dropping a five-set decision against Post University on Friday evening.
Howard, who tallied six blocks against Post on Friday night, moved into sixth place on the Lightning's career list with her nine blocks, giving her 155 career blocks. In addition, senior setter/opposite
Monica Dempsey (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) contributed a season-high 18 digs along with nine kills and seven assists.
Meanwhile, sophomore outside hitter
Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.) posted her ninth “double double” of the season with a team-high 12 kills and 12 digs. McCoy also added three blocks in the victory.
After posting a career-high 25 digs against Post on Friday night, freshman defensive specialist
Mackenzie Wilson (Concord H.S./Wilmington, Del.) contributed 15 digs for the Lightning, who held a 66-50 advantage in digs.
Senior middle blocker
Chelsea Zurcher (South River H.S./Crofton, Md.) led the Clippers in a losing effort with a match-high 21 kills with a .372 hitting percentage and five blocks. Meanwhile, sophomore outside hitter
Leina Braga (Salvador, Brazil) contributed a “double double” with 18 kills and 16 digs.
Notes: Of the Lightning's final four matches, three of them needed a fifth set … With her 12 kills on Saturday afternoon, McCoy moved into fifth place in school history with 618 career kills … In addition, she finishes the season with 335 kills, which is the fourth-highest single-season total in school history … Over her final four matches, McCoy averaged 17.25 kills per outing, including a career-high 24 kills against Bloomfield in a five-set loss … In the final three matches of the season, Wilson averaged 19.0 digs per contest … Howard ended the season with 84 blocks this season, which is the fifth-highest mark in school history … Dempsey ends her career ranked second in school history in career assists (1,926) and fourth in career digs (1,209) … She is the only player in school history with 1,000 career assists and 1,000 career digs … In addition, Dempsey tallied 460 career kills, the ninth-highest total in Goldey-Beacom volleyball history.
