DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Junior guard
A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) scored a career-high 25 points and added a season-high seven rebounds to lead Goldey-Beacom College (3-4) to its second straight win, an 85-76 non-conference victory over Mercy College (0-5) at the Mavericks' Mercy Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
Led by Picard, the Lightning have won three of their last four games after opening the season with an 0-3 record.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the opening four minutes of the first half before back-to-back three-point field goals from Picard and junior guard
Keith Thomas (Gwynn Park H.S./Lanham, Md.) tied the game at 12-12 with 14:54 remaining in the opening period.
But, the Mavericks scored six of the next eight points to reclaim a four-point edge with 11:59 left on a lay-up by senior guard
Joseph Pope (Firestone H.S./Akron, Ohio) before the Lightning followed with a 15-6 run, including seven points from Picard, to take a 29-24 lead with 6:53 left.
Trailing by five points, the Mavericks put together a 10-1 spurt over the next three minutes to regain the advantage at 34-30 with four minutes remaining on a three-point field goal by junior guard
Chaz Morrish (St. Mary's H.S./Douglaston, N.Y.).
However, the Lightning answered by scoring 13 of the next 22 points, including six points by Picard, for a 43-42 advantage before the Mavericks scored on a lay-up by junior forward
Kirk Bailey (St. Mary's H.S./Freeport, N.Y.) with eight seconds left to take a 44-43 lead into the intermission.
The Mavericks extended their lead to 50-47 in the opening 2:14 of the second half by scoring 6 of the first 10 points before the Lightning put together an 8-2 spurt to regain a three-point edge with 12:57 left on a lay-up by sophomore guard
Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.).
After the Mavericks battled to tie the game at 57-57, the Lightning scored eight unanswered points to take a 65-57 advantage on a three-point field goal by sophomore guard
Curtis Hopkins (Williamstown H.S./Williamstown, N.J.).
But, a 14-5 run by the Mavericks closed the gap to 70-69 on a Bailey jumper with 3:20 remaining before the Lightning countered with five straight points to increase the margin to 75-69.
The teams traded field goals twice before the Lightning secured the victory by making six straight free throws in the final 32 seconds.
Picard, who recorded his second 20-point effort in the last three games, made 7 of 16 shots from the field along with all eight of his free throw attempts to lead the Lightning to the victory. In seven games this season, he is now 32-for-33 (.970) from the foul line.
Junior forward
Jordan Thorpe (Mount Zion Christian Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.) added his first “double double” of the season with 13 points and a season-high 18 rebounds while Porter contributed 16 points with four rebounds.
Pope led the Mavericks in a losing effort with 22 points by making 10 of 17 field goal attempts in addition to three rebounds and two assists. Meanwhile, Bailey added 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Lightning, who are in the middle of a five-game road trip, will return to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Friday night when they travel to Concordia for a 7 p.m. game against the Clippers.
Notes: Over the last three games, Goldey-Beacom is averaging 93.3 points per game … The Lightning shot 51.7 per cent from the field against the Mavericks on Wednesday night, marking the third straight game they have made at least 50 per cent of their field goal attempts … Senior forward
Lawrence Livingston (Caesar Rodney H.S./Dover, Del.) matched his career high with six blocked shots on Wednesday night, moving him into sole possession of second place on the Lightning's career list with 82 blocks … The 18 rebounds by Thorpe are the most by a Goldey-Beacom player this season … Over the last three games, Picard is scoring 21.6 points per game … Thomas scored a season-high 14 points in the win on Wednesday night, marking his second double-digit scoring effort in the last three games … The Lightning shot a season-high 82.4 per cent from the foul line on Wednesday night by making 14 of 17 attempts.
