Assumption Holds Off Women's Basketball to Earn 61-53 Victory

Lightning Drop Second Straight Game After 3-0 Start

EASTON, Mass. – Led by senior forward Sabrina Siciliano (Fairfield-Warde H.S./Fairfield, Conn.), Assumption College (3-0) built a 12-point halftime lead and held off a second half comeback by Goldey-Beacom College (3-2) to earn a 61-53 victory over the Lightning at the Stonehill Tip-Off Classic at Merkert Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Siciliano scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the first half as the Greyhounds led by a 30-18 margin at the intermission before the Lightning attempted to make a comeback in the second half.

After the Lightning jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first five minutes of the opening stanza, the Greyhounds answered by scoring 11 consecutive points to take a 16-8 advantage with 11:23 remaining in the period on a pair of free throws from junior guard Tafanie Roye (Capital Prep Magnet H.S./New Britain, Conn.).

The teams traded field goals four times before Assumption scored six of the final eight points to take a 30-18 lead at the end of the first half.

After senior Katy Howard (Medway H.S./Medway, Mass.) opened the second half with a three-point field goal, the Lightning put together a 21-11 run over a seven-minute span to close the gap to 45-39 on a lay-up by senior guard Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.).

But, the Greyhounds extended the advantage to 54-45 by scoring 9 of the next 15 points over a four-minute span.

The Lightning closed the deficit to 55-49 by scoring four of the next five points, but were unable to get any closer as the Greyhounds held on for the victory.

In leading the Greyhounds to the victory, Siciliano made 7 of 11 field goal attempts and 6 of 10 free throws. She also added a game-high nine rebounds and five steals. Meanwhile, Howard added 13 points with two assists while senior guard Gabrielle Gibson (Copiague H.S./Amityville, N.Y.) contributed 13 points with five rebounds off the bench.

Richardson scored a team-high 13 points for the Lightning, making four of nine field goal attempts in addition to going five-for-six at the free throw line. She also had a season-high seven steals with four rebounds.

Senior forward Akilah Sewell (Baltimore City College H.S./Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points in the loss with a season-high four blocks with eight rebounds. Senior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, Pa.) contributed 11 points with four rebounds and two steals.

The Lightning, who opened the season with five consecutive road games, will return home on Tuesday night to host the University of the Sciences in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener at 6 p.m.
