NEW CASTLE, Del. – Junior middle hitter
Katie Shorter (Broadneck H.S./Pasadena, Md.) tallied 10 kills and a match-high six blocks to lead Wilmington University (18-4, 10-0) to its eighth straight win, a three-set Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (4-13, 0-9) at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.
The Wildcats, who are one of two undefeated teams in conference play, earned the victory by scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-15. Meanwhile, the Lightning suffered its 10th loss in a row.
While Shorter led the Wildcats to the victory, senior outside hitter
Nicole Wiechecki (Ursuline Academy/Wilmington, Del.) contributed nine kills and 12 digs along with two blocks. Meanwhile, freshman outside hitter
Kaitlin DiGiacinto (Old Mill H.S./Glen Burnie, Md.) contributed a match-high 20 digs and four kills.
Senior middle hitter
Catherine Howard (William Penn H.S./New Castle, Del.) led the Lightning in a losing effort by posting a season-high nine kills while hitting .600 without a service error. Meanwhile, senior setter/opposite
Monica Dempsey (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) added her team-leading eighth “double double” of the season with 20 assists and 15 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter
Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.) added a team-high 16 digs and six kills while sophomore defensive specialist
Niki Receveur (Concord H.S./Wilmington, Del.) contributed 12 digs.
The Lightning will return home on Thursday night to host Chestnut Hill College at the Joseph West Jones College Center at 7 p.m. It will be the team's annual “Dig Pink” match as the Lightning will be trying to raise money for the Side Out Foundation.
