WATERBURY, Conn. – After battling to a 1-1 tie against Goldey-Beacom College (2-9-0, 0-7-0) in the first half on Saturday, Post University (6-2-3, 4-0-3) exploded for four goals in the second half to earn its fourth win in the last six matches with a 5-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Lightning at the Eagles' LaMoy Field.
The Eagles, who are 4-1-1 in the last six matches, tied their season high with the five-goal output on Saturday while handing Goldey-Beacom its fourth consecutive defeat.
After a slow start to the first half, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when senior midfielder
Matt Luis (Kaynor Tech/Naugatuck, Conn.) scored off a rebound of a shot by junior defender
Kevin Ipina (Danbury H.S./Danbury, Conn.) for his first goal of the year.
But, the Lightning answered with less than two minutes left in the opening stanza when freshman
Jorge Saad (San Juan, Brazil) scored the first goal of his college career on a penalty kick after the Eagles were called for a foul in the penalty area.
With the score tied at 1-1, the Eagles regained the one-goal advantage less than four minutes into the second half when senior defender
Ivor Robertson (Portland, Jamaica) scored an unassisted goal on a sharp angle shot near the sideline that went into the upper left corner of the goal.
Less than three minutes later, the Eagles upped the lead to 3-1 on a goal by junior forward
Ani Lekaj (New Milford H.S./Sherman, Conn.) after he received a pass from Luis.
With 10:23 remaining, junior midfielder
Steven Vaz (Woodland Regional H.S./Beacon Falls, Conn.) extended the margin to 4-1 with his first goal of the season off assists from sophomore forward
Gustavo Ferreira (Betim, Brazil) and senior forward
Eltany Morais (Cape Verde Islands).
Freshman forward
Raphael Moura (Danbury H.S./Danbury, Conn.) added an insurance marker with 5:46 remaining when he scored his first goal of the season, an unassisted marker past senior goalkeeper
Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela).
Luis led the Eagles to the victory with a goal and an assist while sophomore goalkeeper
Andre Lindsay (Clarendon, Jamaica) made four saves.
Farias, who became the Lightning's career saves leader against Shippensburg on Wednesday, made three saves as Post outshot the Lightning by a 17-8 margin.
With the win, the Eagles extended their home unbeaten streak to 15 matches. Ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tires Division II East Region poll, Post has a 4-0-1 record at LaMoy Field this season.
The Lightning will finish their quick two-match road trip on Wednesday afternoon by traveling to Holy Family University for a CACC match against the Tigers.
