Women's Tennis Shuts Out Millersville for 9th Win, 9-0

Lightning Earn Sixth Shutout Victory of Season

Melanie Bonomo earned the 41st singles win of her college career in Wednesday's 9-0 victory over Millersville.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Led by sophomore Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia), the Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team earned its fifth win in the last six matches by posting a 9-0 non-conference victory over Millersville University at the McComsey Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lightning, who improved to 9-2 on the season, posted their sixth shutout victory of the season while handing the Marauders their second loss in three matches.

After teaming up with senior Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) to earn an 8-2 victory at number one singles, Puentes Robinson earned her fifth consecutive singles win by defeating senior Melissa Plowman (Dallastown H.S./York, Pa.) with a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

Meanwhile, Sancho posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over junior Elizabeth Wagner (Susquehannock H.S./Glen Rock, Pa.) at number three singles.

Junior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) also tallied a pair of victories against the Marauders. She posted an 8-1 victory with sophomore Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) at number three doubles before earning a 6-0, 6-0 decision at number two singles over senior Kelsey Waite (Avon Grove H.S./West Grove, Pa.).

Sophomore Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number four singles after teaming up with senior Vanessa Leon (Caracas, Venezuela) to post an 8-4 triumph at number two doubles.

Junior Gabriela Chaves (Joao Pessoa, Brazil) and senior Melanie Bonomo (Maracay, Venezuela) also earned wins at number five and number six singles, respectively. Chaves posted a 6-2, 6-2 win while Bonomo defeated senior Jess Taleff (Camp Hill H.S./Camp Hill, Pa.) by scores of 6-1 and 6-1.

The Lightning will be idle until Friday, Oct. 12 when they travel to Post University for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match against the Eagles at 2 p.m.
