WILMINGTON, Del. – Freshman middle hitter
Chelsea Hughes (Shoreham-Wading River H.S./Wading River, N.Y.) recorded eight kills and added three blocks as Philadelphia University (9-5, 5-2) snapped a two-match losing streak with a three-set Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (4-11, 0-7) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Wednesday evening.
The Rams, who earned their fifth three-set victory of the season, earned the win by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18. Meanwhile, the Lightning dropped their eighth straight match.
Led by Hughes, the Rams hit .243 in the match, including a .323 hitting percentage in the first set. Hughes recorded a .500 hitting percentage with no attack errors in 16 attempts, marking the third time this season she has hit .500 or better.
Meanwhile, junior outside hitter
Brittany Olson (Sycamore H.S./Sycamore, Ill.) and freshman outside hitter
Allison Manley (Saint Charles East H.S./Saint Charles, Ill.) each contributed seven kills while junior setter
Heather Martin (Conestoga Valley H.S./Leola, Pa.) posted a match-high 17 assists.
Sophomore outside hitter
Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.) led the Lightning in a losing effort by tallying a match-high 10 kills with five digs while senior setter/opposite
Monica Dempsey (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) added a “double double” with 11 assists and 10 digs. She also added five kills in the loss.
Freshman setter
Jamika Townsend (King's Fork H.S./Suffolk, Va.) also tallied a “double double” for the Lightning, posting 14 assists with 10 digs.
The Lightning will embark on a quick two-match road trip on Friday night when they travel to the University of the Sciences for a 7 p.m. match against the Devils. It will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams after the Devils posted a four-set victory at the Jones Center on Sept. 17.
