NEW CASTLE, Del. – Junior forward Jonathan DeNicola (Mechanicsburg H.S./Mechanicsburg, Pa.) scored two goals in the second half as Shippensburg University (2-6-2) snapped a seven-match winless streak by earning a 6-1 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (2-8-0) at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

After being limited to just five goals in their last five matches, the Raiders tallied five goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie en route to their first win since a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Sept. 2.

Junior midfielder Oli Templeton (Halifax, England) gave the Raiders a quick 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when he scored after receiving passes from sophomore forward Fred Lucas (San Jose, Costa Rica) and senior midfielder Taylor Hudson (Concord H.S./Wilmington, Del.).

But, the Lightning answered just over 11 minutes later when junior forward Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil) tallied his second goal of the season by bending a free kick into the upper left corner of the goal.

The Raiders regained the one-goal advantage in the 57th minute when junior Patrick Urmson (Rauma, Finland) scored his second goal of the season after heading in a free kick from senior defender Joe Nixon (Huddersfield, England).

Just over six minutes later, Lucas upped the Shippensburg advantage to 2-1 when he scored on a rebound of his own penalty kick after the Raiders were fouled in the penalty area. It was Lucas' second goal of the season.

DeNicola extended the cushion in the 69th minute to 4-1 when he received a pass from Templeton and scored on a one-on-one breakaway past senior goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela) for his second goal of the season.

In the 73rd minute, DeNicola tallied his second goal of the match with an unassisted marker before senior defender Austin Hill (Concord H.S./Wilmington, Del.) added his second goal of the match, upping the Raiders' lead to 6-1 with 2:07 remaining.

While DeNicola scored twice to lead the Raiders, Lucas and Templeton each added a goal with an assist as Shippensburg outshot Goldey-Beacom by a commanding 26-3 margin.

With eight saves in a losing effort, Farias broke the Goldey-Beacom career saves record that was held by Garrett Shuler from 2005-08 and now has 285 career saves. Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela) made four saves in the final 13 minutes.

The Lightning, who have dropped six of their last seven matches, will return to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon by traveling to Post for a 3 p.m. match against the Eagles.
