Women's Tennis Shuts Out West Chester, 9-0

Lightning Set School Record With Third Straight Shutout Win

Rocio Cabanillas Moreno earned two wins in the Lightning's 9-0 victory on Tuesday.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Led by a pair of wins from sophomore Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia), Goldey-Beacom College (11-2) set a school record by posting its third consecutive shutout victory with a 9-0 non-conference victory over West Chester University (4-3) at the South Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.  

The Lightning, who won for the seventh time in the last eight matches, also extended its school record by earning the eighth shutout win of the season. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams suffered their third straight loss after opening the season with a 4-0 record.

After earning an 8-0 victory with sophomore Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) at number two doubles, Melnikova became the seventh player in school history to record at least 20 career singles wins with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at number six singles over freshman Nicole Nardi (Mainland Regional H.S./Linwood, N.J.).

Meanwhile, Correia earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over senior Alexandra Santoro (Holy Spirit H.S./Absecon, N.J.) at number four singles.

Sophomore Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) also posted a pair of victories in the Lightning's win. She posted an 8-2 triumph with senior Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) at number one doubles before extending her singles win streak to six straight matches with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at number one singles over senior Brittany Counts (Whiteland Community H.S./Greenwood, Ind.).

Sancho also earned a singles victory against the Golden Rams, defeating senior Gabriela Durand in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) at number three singles.

Junior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) recorded a pair of victories over West Chester, combining with senior Vanessa Leon (Caracas, Venezuela) for an 8-2 verdict at number three doubles before earning a 6-0, 6-1 decision at number two singles.

Leon also had a singles victory against the Golden Rams, defeating junior Haley Wissinger (Chambersburg H.S./Chambersburg, Pa.) at number five singles.

The Lightning will travel to Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Oct. 20 to face the Griffins in the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Tennis Championship at 1 p.m. Goldey-Beacom will be trying to earn its first CACC title in women's tennis.
