WILMINGTON, Del. – Senior forward
Facundo Zalazar (Buenos Aires City, Argentina) scored two goals to lead Caldwell College (5-6-1, 4-3-0) to its fifth win in the last seven matches, a 5-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (3-10-0, 1-8-0) at the Lightning's Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Saturday afternoon.
Led by Zalazar, the Cougars erupted for a season-high five goals, including four in the second half, while spoiling Homecoming for the Lightning.
After a slow start to the match, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute when freshman midfielder
Christian Castro (Clifton H.S./Clifton, N.J.) scored the first goal of his college career off an assist from sophomore midfielder
Yousef Elhusseini (Old Bridge H.S./Old Bridge, N.J.).
Less than seven minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder
Evan Teitelbaum (Holmdel H.S./Holmdel, N.J.) upped the lead to 2-0 when he tallied his second goal of the season after receiving a pass from senior forward
Chris Skarbelis (Leonardtown H.S./North Andover, Mass.).
But, the Lightning narrowed the margin to 2-1 in the 56th minute when junior midfielder
Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil) tallied his third goal of the season, an unassisted marker past freshman goalkeeper
Michael Hartmann (Shawnee H.S./Medford, N.J.).
However, Zalazar increased the lead for Caldwell by scoring twice in a 13-minute span to give the Cougars a 4-1 advantage. After scoring off assists from Castro and Elhusseini in the 63rd minute, he added an unassisted goal past senior goalkeeper
Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela) with 14:36 left for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
In the 84th minute, senior midfielder
Juan Lopez (Madison H.S./Madison, N.J.) provided an insurance goal for the Cougars with his first marker of the season off a rebound of a shot by senior midfielder
Donald Kafer (Bordentown H.S./Bordentown, N.J.).
While Zalazar led the Cougars with a two-goal effort, Castro posted a goal with an assist while Elhusseini added a pair of assists. Hartmann made six saves for the Cougars, who outshot Goldey-Beacom by a 15-13 margin.
Meanwhile, Farias made three saves in a losing effort for the Lightning, who have dropped five of their last six matches.
The Lightning will finish their home schedule on Wednesday afternoon when they host Washington College in a non-conference match at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the Cougars will host Felician College on Tuesday afternoon.
