BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - In a rematch of last year's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament final, the Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team once again came up short, 6-3 in a battle of two undefeated conference rivals at Meyers Tennis Center on Fri. afternoon.
The Lightning, who were without their usual No. 3 and 4 singles players, fell to 2-1 while Concordia improved to 4-0 on the season and extended its conference regular season win-streak to 20 matches.
Freshman Stephanie Puentes (3-0) and junior
Blanca Sancho (2-1) earned impressive singles victories at the top two spots and freshman
Anastasia Melnikova (2-0) was victorious at No. 6.
Puentes, battling a wrist injury, handed junior Yuliya Plevako the first conference loss of her career at the first flight. She defeated Plevako, a second-team All-CACC selection last year, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) in a 10-point tiebreaker. Sancho also came through for a big Lightning win at No. 2 singles, downing Ana S.O. Mendes 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Melnikova earned her second win of the season by defeating junior Camilla Xavier, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6 singles. Xavier was previously 13-0 in conference play for her career and 3-0 this season.
Without freshman
Filipa Correia and

Vanessa Leon was also inserted into the singles line-up at the No. 4 spot and she bowed out to Juliana Frey, 6-0, 6-2.

Gabriela Chaves and freshman Stephanie Puentes, 8-1 in the first flight, juniors
Vanessa Leon and
Blanca Sancho fell 8-4 to Juliana Frey and Ana S.O. Mendes at second flight, and junior
Melanie Bonomo and freshman
Anastasia Melnikova bowed out 8-6 to Maria Ortiz and Camilla Xavier.
