GBC Women's Tennis Cruises Past Caldwell

Lightning Win in Second Match of the Day

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team, playing in its second match of the day, defeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Caldwell, 9-0 on Friday evening at Caldwell Tennis Courts.

The Lightning swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches to improve to 3-1 on the season while Caldwell fell to 2-4 (1-3 CACC).

Freshman Filipa Correia braved a foot injury to team up with classmate Stephanie Puentes for an 8-1 No. 1 doubles win over Gwynne and Paige Alden. Freshman Anastasia Melnikova and sophomore Gabriela Chaves earned an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Amanda Berry and Sara Wilkins and juniors Blanca Sancho and Vanessa Leon defeated Briana Gaspich and Olga Ndhlovu, 8-1 at third doubles.

In singles play, Puentes improved to 4-0 on the year with a dominant 8-0 win over Paige Alden, just hours after she defeated Concordia's Yuliya Plevako. Junior Blanca Sancho (3-1) bested Gwynne Alden, 8-1 at No. 2 and junior Melanie Bonomo downed Wilkins, 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.

Leon (2-1) defeated Gaspich, 8-2 at No. 4, Chaves (2-1) beat Berry 8-1 at No. 5, and Melnikova improved to 2-0 with an 8-2 win over Ndhlovu at the sixth spot.

Next up for GBC is a visit from CACC rival Holy Family University on Wed., Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. The Tigers are 2-2 in league play and most recently lost, 5-4 against Chestnut Hill on Sept. 27.
