Women's Tennis Blanks Devils, 9-0

Lightning Improve to 2-0

PIKE CREEK, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team blew by the University of the Sciences, 9-0 on Mon. afternoon at Del Castle Tennis Center to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Lightning cruised to a 3-0 start in doubles play, winning all three flights, 8-0. Then they completed the shutout with six straight singles wins to hand the Devils (0-1) a season-opening loss.

Freshmen Stephanie Puentes and Filipa Correia were dominant again in singles and doubles play. Puentes defeated USciences' Sarah Durham, 6-1, 6-0 and Correia downed Juliet Choi, 6-0, 6-0 at first and third singles, respectively. The two also combined for a first flight doubles win over Durham and Melissa White, 8-0.

Junior Blanca Sancho earned her first victory of the season by defeating Laney Jones, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Meanwhile, junior Melanie Bonomo stayed unbeaten as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles.

Senior Marina Sales and sophomore Gabriela Chaves teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Sales won her singles match, 6-0, 6-0 and Chaves picked up a win, 6-0, 6-1.

At third flight doubles, sophomore Vanessa Leon and freshman Anastasia Melnikova won convincingly over Michelle Adamczyk and Ana Vo, 8-0.

The Lightning are back in action on Wed. against West Chester University of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Golden Rams were 15-10 a year ago and advanved to the PSAC semifinals. GBC won last year's meeting, 5-1.
