WILMINGTON, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team gave a valiant effort, but were outlasted, 8-1 in its regular season finale against Queens College, the No. 28 ranked team in Division II and No. 2 team in the East Region.
The Lightning (12-5), ranked No. 5 in the latest East Region poll, will await the final NCAA regional rankings that will decide if and where they will be seeded in the 2011 NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.
Queens, which was playing in its first match of the Spring season, improved to 15-0 with the win. GBC did however become just the third team to pick up a point against the undefeated Knights.
Sophomore Melanie Bonomo (12-4) earned the Lightning's lone point of the match with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 win over Taylor Barber (10-2).
Freshman Gabriela Chaves nearly gave GBC a second singles win at the No. 6 flight, but after a 6-4 win in the first set, lost the second set 6-3 and lost the tie-breaker, 11-9.
The Lightning competed strongly in all four other singles matches, but Queens came away with five of the six points.
Junior Marina Sales, who had been battling illness all week long, returned to head coach Joe Kissel's lineup in her usual No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles spot. The tandem of Sales and Chaves once again proved that they can hang with top-notch competition, the same way they did in a 9-8 loss against Division I University of Delaware's No. 1 doubles pair. They lost a highly-contested 8-6 verdict to QC's Linda Tatla Kolin and Andrea Salvetova.
GBC lost at No. 2 and 3 doubles as well, as the visiting Knights strolled out of Wilmington with a win over the Lightning for the second straight year.
