WILMINGTON, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team continued its dominance in Division II competition as the Lightning dominated the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Shippensburg, 9-0 at McKean H.S. on a cold, windy Sat. afternoon.
With the win, head coach Joe Kissel's GBC squad improved to 12-4 on the season, with two of those four losses coming to Division I opponents. The Lightning are 12-2 against Division II teams with five shutout wins.
Junior Marina Sales, a No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles player in the Lightning's lineup, was out due to illness, but that simply gave the fifth-ranked team in the East Region a chance to showcase its depth.
Freshman Marie-Louise Klein filled in for Sales at No. 1 doubles with classmate Gabriela Chaves for an 8-0 victory over Shippensburg's Jess Lodek and Hannah Lolley. At singles, sophomore Melanie Bonomo filled in at the third spot and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Monica Barardi.
Freshman Laura Cure and Chaves each moved up one spot to No. 4 and 5, respectively, and sophomore Vanessa Leon played at the No. 6 spot. All three won their singles matches, convincingly.
