PIKE CREEK, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team improved to 4-1 with a convincing, 7-2 victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Holy Family University at Del Castle Tennis Center on Wed. afternoon.
The Lightning claimed two of the three doubles wins and five of the six singles wins to earn their fifth straight victory over their league rival, dating back to 2009.
Freshman Stephanie Puentes, the reigning CACC player and rookie of the week, remained unbeaten (5-0) in singles play as she defeated previously undefeated in conference play, junior Juliana Victoria, handily, 6-1, 6-0.
Senior
Marina Sales returned to the singles lineup and defeated Maja Pantellic, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot to improve to 3-0 on the season. Junior
Melanie Bonomo bested Steicy Castro, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 to move to 4-1 on the year, junior
Vanessa Leon defeated Chelsea Brown, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5, and freshman
Anastasia Melnikova stayed unbeaten (3-0) with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kaitlin Cook. Junior
Blanca Sancho (3-2) gave a valiant effort at No. 2 singles, but came up short against junior Jin Querubin, 2-6, 5-7.
In doubles play, Puentes and fellow freshman
Filipa Correia suffered a narrow, 8-5 loss to Victoria and Querubin in the first flight, but the Lightning claimed victories in the other two matches. Sales and sophomore
Gabriela Chaves earned an 8-5 victory at the second flight, and Sancho and Leon defeated Castro and Cook, 8-2 in the third flight.
Next up for the Lightning is another home match against league foe Post University on Tues., Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
