WATERBURY, Conn. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road match against Post University at Chase Collegiate School.
The Lightning improved to 6-0 on the season overall and 5-0 in conference play. This marks the second straight year they have started out 6-0, and the year before that (2008), they began 5-0.
GBC won all three doubles matches by 8-0 shutouts and also won all six singles matches to complete its second 9-0 sweep of the season.
Sophomore Blanca Sancho (2-4) dominated at first singles, 6-0, 6-1 for her first singles win since the season opener on Sept. 2 at Molloy. She also teamed up with sophomore Anastasia Chibrikova at No. 2 doubles for an 8-0 shutout win.
Freshman Marie-Louise Klein (4-2) won her second straight singles match at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1 over Post's Leah McQueeny. She also teamed up with junior Marina Sales for a shutout victory at No. 1 doubles.
The Lightning would then win the No. 3-6 singles matches all by identical scores of 6-0, 6-0. Sales bounced back from a tough loss against Philadelphia with a one-sided victory over Sarah Yacavone. Sophomore Melanie Bonomo (6-0) remained unbeaten at No. 4 singles, and Luciana and Daniela Pereira each earned very convincing wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Luciana improved to 3-0 while Daniela is now 1-0.
Freshman Laura Cure was given the day off as Luciana Pereira played at No. 5 singles and freshman Gabriela Chaves returned to the lineup to team up with sophomore Vanessa Leon for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Chaves had missed the last match due to a severe blister on her foot, but helped Leon stay unbeaten in doubles play on the season.
GBC faces a stiff test on Tues. afternoon as the Lightning travels to Dover to face Division I Delaware State. The Hornets are 2-0 with back-to-back shutout wins on Sept. 18-19 against St. Francis and Rider, respectively to begin the season.
