JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's cross country team was just two points out of 4th place as they finished 5th with a team score of 59 in the Women's 4K run of the Stevens Invitational at Liberty State Park on Fri. evening.

Sophomore Liz Williams and freshman Symone Stewart paced the Lightning with times of 17:39.26 (26th) and 18:33.98 (29th), respectively as the Lightning were able to beat out four of the other competing teams. They have now beaten nine teams through three meets this season.

NYU took first in the 4K portion of the meet with a total team time of 44:34.81 (14:51.61 average) and a team score of seven. NYU was followed by SUNY New Paltz (45:47.04,14 team points) and the host Stevens (50:43.58, 35).

CUNY John Jay beat out GBC for fourth place by just a little over 21 seconds with a time of 56:21.05 and a team score of 57. The Lightning came in at fifth with a time of 56:42.48 and an 18:54.16 average runner speed to earn a team score of 59.

St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) (69), Fairleigh Dickinson (at Florida) (73), Rutgers-Newark University (107), and the College of New Rochelle (119) rounded out the scoring for the day.

Head coach Brian Conley was encouraged again by the improvement this week from his “pack” of runners behind Williams and Stewart.

“I think Alyssa and Brittney Murray and Carly Mitchell will start to move closer to our leaders by the middle of the season,” Conley said. “This will hopefully make the team more competitive when we face stronger teams.”
