PHILADELPHIA – The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team had an impressive showing at the 2010 USTA/ITA East Regional Championship this past Sat. through Monday that included a finalist and three quarterfinalists in singles play and a semifinalist doubles team.

Freshman Laura Cure became the first-ever Lightning tennis player in the program's short history to reach the finals in the ITA Tournament. In the Women's B Singles bracket, she defeated Holy Family's Maya Pantelic in the first round (8-6), C.W. Post's Cathrine Avelar in the second round (8-1), Stonehill's Chelsea Haedrich in the third round (8-6), Concordia's Camilla Xavier in the quarterfinals (8-3) and Stonehill's Lindsay Simmons in the semifinals (8-0) before falling to Stonehill's Paige Frost in the finals (8-2).

Cure also teamed with sophomore Vanessa Leon to reach the semifinals of the Women's B Doubles bracket. The Lightning's No. 3 doubles team in regular season matches first defeated Bentley's Murphy and Tetu (8-5), then Southern New Hampshire's Houghton and Cole (8-1) and Georgian Court's Aimone and Greici (8-1) before falling to Stonehill's White and Martin in a grueling, 9-7 semifinal match. White and Martin went on to win in the finals, 8-6 over SNHU's Echeverry and Pease.

Leon was also one of three Lightning players to reach the quarterfinals of the Women's B Singles bracket, along with Cure and senior Luciana Pereira. Leon first beat Maria Perevenzentseva of perennial East Region powerhouse Queens, 8-3, then University of the Science's in Philadelphia's Sara Durham (8-2) and finally Bentley's Aimee Tetu. She would ultimately fall in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion, Frost.

Pereira's road to the quarterfinals included an 8-0 win over Monica Cariaso of Queens, a second-round victory over Georgian Court's Aimone, and then an 8-5 victory over her own teammate, freshman Gabriela Chaves. She was eventually overcome by Stonehill's Kaitlyn Martin, 8-3.

Representing the Lightning in the Women's A singles bracket were freshman Marie-Louise Klein and sophomore Blanca Sancho. Each of them advanced to the round of 16, and Klein lost to the eventual Singles A champion, Amber Chandronnait (Southern New Hampshire).

In the Women's A doubles bracket, Klein and junior Marina Sales earned a first-round win, but fell to a Holy Family doubles team in the second round. Chaves and Sancho were ousted in the first round by a team from Queens.

The regular season resumes for the Lightning on Wed. as they visit Holy Family (3-0) for a rematch of last year's epic Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinal match won by GBC. The match begins at 3:30 p.m.
