BRONX, N.Y. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's cross country team continues to improve as it finished sixth of eight teams at the Queensborough Community College Invitational on Sun. at Van Cortland Park.
The Lightning finished with a team score of 128 points, 22 points behind fifth-place Brooklyn College (106) and 18 points ahead of seventh-place CCNY (146). Baruch College and SUNY Maritime each tied for first with 60 points, with John Jay College (94) and Fashion Institute of Technology (98) rounding out the top-five.
Sophomore Liz Williams led the Lightning on the challenging 5K course with a time of 23:10 to finish fifth overall. Williams now owns four spots on the school's top-35 performances list – two of them coming in the first two meets of this season.
Freshman Symone Stewart took 14th with a time of 24:38. This marked her second consecutive top-15 start to start the season and her collegiate career.
“The addition of Symone has made the team very competitive, and I expect big races from her in the near future,” Conley said.
The Lightning “pack” improved this weekend by an average of 1:15 per runner. Brittney Murray (27:12, 31st), Carly Mitchell (28:47, 42nd) and Alyssa Murray (29:04, 43rd) made big strides and really helped the team's performance, according to Conley.
“Even on a much hillier course this week, each one of them improved,” Conley said.
Freshman Tigan Frisby (32:09, 58th) was the final finisher for GBC, completing her first collegiate cross country race.
“I was very proud of Tigan's performance,” Conley said.
