LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team won the battle in every major statistic but the scoreboard on Thurs. evening as the visiting Lightning succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Chestnut Hill.
On a cloudy, humid late afternoon, the Lightning (0-5, 0-2 CACC) managed to outshoot Chestnut Hill 22-12 and take nine corner kicks to the Griffins' two. They were even penalized less (5-to-9) and called offsides less (3-to-5).
Yet somehow, despite only taking three shots on goal all night, the Griffins managed to sneak in a goal in the 75th minute to claim the victory. That lone goal was scored by Darius Gbunblee, who came up with a deflection off a GBC defender and sent a strike past Farias at the 74:02 mark in what was his only shot of the day and for his first ever collegiate goal. Darryl Richardson was credited with the assist.
Nine different Lightning players were credited with shots and six took shots on goal. Sophomore Matt Bik took a team-high five shots, and freshman Thatcher Howell took four, putting all of them on net.
Goldey-Beacom's defensive unit, consisting of senior Mike Sager, Bik, sophomore Mariano Olcese and senior Chris Casey who filled in for captain Dave Krawczyk at sweeper, was superb for most of the afternoon, particularly in the first half when it only allowed CHC to take two shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (0-5) played the full 90 minutes, making two saves and allowing one goal. Chestnut Hill's Mike Goldstein made 12 saves to earn the complete game shutout.
The Lightning will now go on the road to face a stiff test against CACC foe Bloomfield. The Deacons, looking to avenge last year's 1-0 defeat at GBC, come into the game ranked sixth in the East Region.
