Lightning Women’s Tennis Zaps Georgian Court, 8-1

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team improved to 3-0 with a convincing, 8-1 victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe, Georgian Court on Tues. afternoon at the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center.

The Lightning won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to claim the victory. They also won both singles exhibition matches for good measure.

In doubles play, GBC's No. 1 pair of junior Marina Sales and freshman Marie-Louise Klein (2-1) bounced back from a loss against Chestnut Hill their last time out by defeating Georgian Court's Sofia Sarkissova and Hilary Gall, 8-6.

Sophomore Blanca Sancho and freshman Gabriela Chaves improved to 3-0 at No. 2 doubles with an 8-2 win, as did sophomore Vanessa Leon and freshman Laura Cure, with an 8-0 victory at third doubles.

Sancho (1-2) lost a tough first singles match to Sarkissova, 6-3, 6-4, but the Lightning would win the five remaining singles matches.

Klein (2-1) defeated Brittany Aimone, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot, while Sales (2-1) gutted out a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory over Gall at No. 3.

Sophomore Melanie Bonomo stayed perfect at 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Lindsay Hammond, and Cure (3-0), a reigning CACC weekly honorable mention, handed Victoria Gaffney a 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 5 to stay undefeated as well.

Senior Luciana Pereira, who owns the most singles victories in the program's five-year history, saw her first action of the season at No. 6 singles, and she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Natalie Grieci.

In exhibition play, Anastasia Chibrikova defeated Sarah Lockenmeyer, 8-2 and Daniela Pereira beat Brooke Culver, 8-1.

The Lightning will next compete in the ITA Tournament this weekend.
