VINELAND, N.J. – Sophomore Liz Williams and freshman Symone Stewart paced the Goldey-Beacom College women's cross country team as the Lightning, with just five runners, finished 4th of seven teams at the Cumberland College Dukes Invitational on Sat. afternoon.
“Every person counted,” head coach Brian Conley said. “With just five runners, we finished two points ahead of the 5th and 6th place teams. All the ladies finished the race strong, and we held on to the slight edge we had over Cumberland College and Alvernia.”
Williams, who led the Lightning in every race last year, finished 11th overall with a time of 23:37. She begins this season 1:12 faster than last year, according to Conley.
Stewart, in her Lightning debut, ran a 24:12, placing her on the women's all-time performances list at GBC.
“Liz and Symone put the team in a great position to defeat half the field,” Conley said. “And the strong finish of Brittney [Murray], Alyssa [Murray] and Carly [Mitchell] helped the team earn a strong finish.”
Senior Brittney Murray finished 44th with a time of 28:33, followed by her sister, sophomore Alyssa Murray, who finished in 29:30 for 46th place. Freshman Carly Mitchell took 47th with a time of 29:32 in her first collegiate race.
The Lightning will next compete on Sun., Sept. 19 at the Queensborough Community College Invitational which starts at 11 a.m.
