ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Sophomore setter Monica Dempsey led the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team with team-highs of six kills and 11 assists, but the Lightning fell in straight sets at Dominican, 25-16, 25-21, 25-22 in their season finale on Sat. afternoon.
Senior defensive specialist A.J. Hicks led the team with 14 digs. She finished a very impressive four-year career at Goldey-Beacom with 990 career digs.
With the loss, GBC ended the season with a mark of 8-20 overall and 2-17 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Dominican improved to 16-16 and 13-6 in league play.
The Lightning struggled offensively, hitting 21 kills to their 21 errors (.000 hitting percentage) while Dominican hit .214 as a team with 32 kills and just 14 errors.
Head coach Rich Bowers' squad showed a lot of fight in sets two and three. Down 21-15 in set two, sophomore Renee DeLeo served up two aces as part of a 4-0 Lightning surge to cut the Dominican lead to two, 21-19. The Chargers would push ahead and score four of the next six points to win the set.
In set three, GBC was off to a 13-7 advantage led by the service of senior Lauren Witzke. However, Dominican would go on a 10-2 run and take a 17-15 lead.
Trailing 21-18, Goldey-Beacom came back to tie the score by forcing three straight Charger errors. The Lightning would earn one more tie at 22 apiece after a Dominican service error, but Dominican rallied to score the next three points and put the match away.
This match marked the end of the 2010 season. The Lightning return eight of the 10 players from this year's roster in 2011.
