PHILADELPHIA – Senior captain A.J. Hicks had a game-high 21 digs and freshman Tyla Wells had a team-high nine kills, but the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team fell to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Philadelphia University, 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-13) on Tues. night at the Gallagher Center.

The Lightning (7-17, 1-14 CACC) struggled offensively with 26 errors and just 24 kills (-.017 hitting percentage) for the night while Phila U. (17-6, 15-2 CACC) hit .231 as a team (35k 11e 104ta).

Wells' nine kills was her best offensive night of the season since Sept. 4 when she blasted 12 kills against Mercy College. Hicks' 21-dig effort was her second 20+ dig game of the season and just four short of her season-high 25 set against Concordia.

Goldey-Beacom was in contention to take a 1-0 match lead but let the Rams eek out a first-set win by surrendering the final four points. The Lightning, who held the lead several times in the first set including advantages of 18-16 and 19-17, were up 22-21 after a kill by junior Amanda Mills, but three attack errors and one Danielle Carney kill for Phila U. gave the Rams a 25-22 set win.

The second set saw the Lightning grab an early 8-7 lead only to have Phila U. go on a 17-4 run to close out the set. Head coach Rich Bowers called a timeout with his team trailing 19-9, but to no avail. Phila U.'s Ellie Edgar had the final two kills of the set. The Rams had 10 kills and just one error (.375 hitting percentage) as they won set two, 25-11.

GBC scored the first point of set three on a Ram attack error, but Phila. U went on a 6-0 run and never looked back. The Lightning connected on just five kills to go with 10 errors as they hit -.156 for the set and lost 25-13.
