Lightning Tennis Zips Past Caldwell, 9-0

GBC Off to Best Start in Program History

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team earned its third shutout victory of the season with a 9-0 sweep of Caldwell College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Fri. afternoon at McKean High School.

The Lightning improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in CACC play this season. This marks the best start to a season that GBC has ever had in the program's short history and also ties the longest winning streak of seven, set last year. In addition, this win extended GBC's regular season conference winning streak to 11 matches, dating back to a 5-2 win over Philadelphia on Oct. 3, 2009.

Caldwell fell to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Freshman Marie-Louise Klein was moved up to No. 1 singles and doubles today, and she proved she was more than up to the challenge. Klein defeated Sara Wilkins 8-1 (pro-set) in singles and teamed up with sophomore Anastasia Chibrikova for an 8-3 win in their first-ever pairing. Klein boasts a three-match win-streak and is now 5-2 in singles play (1-0 at No. 1, 4-2 at No. 2) for the season. She is also 4-3 in doubles play having won her last two.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Melanie Bonomo moved up from her usual fourth singles spot and provided a dominating, 8-0 pro-set win over Liz Odell. She is unbeaten in singles play this year at 7-0 (1-0 at No. 2, 6-0 at No. 4) and leads the conference in wins.

Freshman Laura Cure, who normally plays in the No. 5 singles slot, played Amanda Berry at No. 3 singles today and came through with an 8-1 pro-set victory. Cure is also unbeaten this season at 6-0 (1-0 at No. 3, 5-0 at No. 5).

Cure teamed with sophomore Vanessa Leon at No. 3 doubles for an 8-2 win. This No. 3 pairing is 6-0 on the season. The Lightning, as a team, are 7-0 at third doubles and 17-4 in doubles play overall. Sophomore Blanca Sancho and freshman Gabriela Chaves provided the other doubles win of the day at the No. 2 slot with an 8-2 victory to stay unbeaten, 5-0.

Senior co-captain Luciana Pereira earned her fourth singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Danielle Levasseur. She is now 2-0 at No. 6, 1-0 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 4.

Leon, who was second on the team in singles wins last year with 13, saw her first singles action of the season at the No. 5 spot and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kierra Tims.

Daniela Pereira, twin sister and fellow co-captain of Luciana, earned her second singles win of the season at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Monica Caruso.

The Lightning are now a combined 21-0 as a team at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots and are 34-8 in singles play overall.

GBC faces a tough task as it tries to improve to 8-0 tomorrow on the road against the East Coast Conference's Dowling College. The Golden Lions are 9-3 heading into a match today against defending CACC champion, Concordia College (NY). The match begins at 1 p.m.
